What is a heat pump?
Around 40% of global emissions are generated by how we heat our homes, and switching to cleaner, low-carbon alternatives plays a critical role in tackling climate change. One of these alternatives is investing in a heat pump for your home or commercial property. Heat pumps are designed to remove ‘low grade’ heat from the ground or air around a building and increase it to a ‘High Grade’ usable temperature that can then be introduced by air or water to keep buildings warm inside. This is possible because the ground and air outside always contain some heat even when it’s below zero degrees, a heat pump refrigeration system often operates its heat reclaim circuit at around -10 to -20°C hence its ability to draw heat most of the time from its surroundings.
How does a heat pump work?
1. The heat from the air outside or warmth from the ground is blown or pumped over the heat exchange surface of the exterior part of the heat pump.
2. This heat (even at zero degrees) causes the refrigerant liquid to evaporate and turn into a gas.
3. This gas moves through a compressor, which increases the pressure and causes the temperature to rise. Much like the end of a bicycle air pump gets hot as you pump up a tyre.
4. The heated gas is passed over the internal heat exchange surface. This heat is then blown around the interior or transferred into a central heating or hot water system.
5. After losing the heat the gas lowers in temperature as the heat is transferred into the home and it returns to a liquid state.
6. This cycle repeats until your building reaches the temperature setting on your thermostat.
